Will Taylor Born 15/06/1942    Died 15/09/1998           Elected member 1979

Training:- Middlesbrough College of Art 1957 - 1961

Personal statement:- My subject matter is mainly landscape; the landscape of Danby dale where I live, and the surrounding North Yorkshire Moors. Northumberland, especially Holy Island, holds a special fascination too. The inevitable seasonal changes, night and day and the extremes of weather, bringing with them endless variations of light, colour and mood, provide the inspiration and focus for my painting and printmaking. While landscape features in my linocuts, I am occasionally drawn to the dramatic imagery of Industrial Teesside or the unique and fascinating shapes of Yorkshire cobbles. Their boldness of form and colour offer limitless possibilities for the medium of printmaking. (Buried.  Church of St.Hilda, Danby, N.Yorkshire.)

Back to Scarborough, Oil, 35 x 24 cms

A self taught artist, was born in Wharfdale, Yorkshire, where he painted for many years. he moved to Scarborough in 1965 and still feels that the Greater Scarborough area is one of the finest painting areas in the country. An active member of the Group and other North Eastern Societies where he would regularly exhibit. His seascapes and landscapes are in many private and corporate collections at home and abroad. Sadly due to ill health Bill has reluctantly resigned from the Group in 2004.

After a long battle with illness, Bill Lowe died of an heart attack at the end of June, 2006. Bill was born in Wharfedale where he later painted his airy pictures of the Dales before moving to Scarborough in 1965. He enjoyed membership of art societies in Ilkley, Otley and the West Riding before leaving for the coast and the greater Scarborough area, where he joined St. Martin’s Group which later amalgamated with the harbour side Group. He was elected to join the Fylingdales Group of Artists in 1976 and achieved success with his work in both watercolour and oils largely inspired by the Spa town and its environs. He became a very reliable, valued and quietly enthusiastic member. His seascapes and landscapes are to be found in private and corporate collections at home and abroad. Bill’s painting and friendship will be missed by us all.  Neville Gray.

Fred Williams 1930 - 1986

A prominent Yorkshire artist was a founder member of the Yorkshire Water Colour Society, a member of the Society of Architectural Illustrators. Born in Manchester in 1930, his varied career, after an apprenticeship in engineering, including draughtsman, Outward Bound Instructor and art teacher.  He became a professional artist in 1976, based originally in Staithes and later in Whitby. Tragically he had only 9 years in which to develop his talent and skills. He is, however, considered by many as having been the most outstanding marine artist in this region during his working life. He conveyed in his work the great strength and sensitivity of his personality. His tremendous enthusiasm, vitality and humour not only heightened the quality of his work but greatly inspired his pupils and affected those who knew him. he had exhibited at the Royal Society of Marine Artists and his work has been shown in many private galleries including ones in Harrogate, York, Sheffield, Helmsley, Malton, Scarborough, Cumbria and Berkhamstead. he held one man exhibitions in Whitby (1981) Oban, Aldeburgh and Scarborough. he had undertaken artwork for the National Trust in Yorkshire, Northumberland, Cumbria and Cambridge.(Taken from exhibition catalogue 'Exhibition of Works of the late Fred Williams 1930-1986 At the Pannet Art Gallery 15th September - 4th October 1987)

Jack Burton

Jack Burton’s name is synonymous with Bridlington Art Society. He was one of the founder members in 1948 and devoted time and energy to ensure the Societies successful continuity. Jack was instrumental in getting Harry Hudson Rodwell the noted Royal Society of Marine Artists, as it’s first President. He was secretary for some years and became treasurer for twelve years. He was rewarded for his efforts by being elected as a Vice President and Honorary life member some years ago. Jack will be remembered too for his contribution by his own accomplishments shown in the many paintings he produced. In the early years, he mainly painted in oils exhibiting local scenes with atmospheric treatment and many ‘still life’ works with expert handling of paint. Jack painted outdoors on the Yorkshire coast from Staithes down to Spurn Point. Yet when he ventured abroad he painted and brought back delightful scenes from the continent. In his late years, he turned quite remarkably to watercolour and his forte was depiction of crowded beach scenes of Bridlington, Scarborough and Filey. These paintings were soon sought after. They had the interest and quality about them of L.S.Lowry. As a person he was highly respected- he would encourage and give constructive advice to fellow painters. He was always referred to as the perfect man. The group will long remember him and he will live on in his paintings.

Statement.    I make direct drawing responses to landscape employing a range of media and techniques; this work feeds the imagination, rouses emotions and helps to provide studio paintings, which have lives of their own, independent of the subject and with relationships of line, pattern and structure emerging from the act of looking. Each work is an adventure into the unknown and an expression of the total experience involved.

Goupil Gallery

In the years around 1850 the Goupil Gallery, then located in the Rue Caulaincourt, was a small shop which sold principally engravings of the works of such painters as Horace Vernet, Paul Delaroche and Ary Scheffer. In 1877, with the third Impressionist exhibition, Goupil became interested in the new movement and from then on the growth of the gallery was rapid. Van Gogh worked in the branch in The Hague in 1869 and was later transferred to the Brussels shop, where he was replaced by his brother Theo prior to his transfer to the London branch. In 1875 Vincent worked for a while at the Paris headquarters, from which he was dismissed the following year. Later, he sent some of his paintings to his brother, Theo, still employed by Goupil, who tried to place them with the Gallery, but they were rejected as 'horrors'. In 1895; Toulouse-Lautrec exhibited a group of his Montmartre canyases at the London shop. Another Goupil related to the founder of the firm, was the author of a book on painting which was instrumental in Matisse's choice of career.
